On July 17, 2007, the US media reported that inexpensive jewelry from China contained a high level of Lead. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission made the 18th recall announcement on products that contained high quantity of Lead on over 670,000 products. Moreover, almost all them were manufactured in China.
High-level Lead containing products are hazardous; children under three are most at risk. Since children are prone to put jewelry into their mouths, this can result in immense amount of lead entering their blood stream. Side effects contain anemia, abdominal pain, reduced cognitive abilities and in extreme cases, seizures and kidney problems.
In Europe, laws prohibit people from selling products without labeling the metal composition and amount. Legal actions will be taken in retailing products over the safety level. Imports will also get inspected carefully. The recent North American and European regulations had given manufacturers and organizations in China overwhelming stress. As if now, there is a great deal of limitation in importing products. From September 2007, due to changes in China¡¯s trading strategy and the idea of recycling, the lack of laborers, and the increasing price in metals did not help with the situation. In fact, over 1000 manufacturers were involved and over 100 factories were shut down.
This incident is a warning to our jewelry line, the inexpensive and low quality strategy cannot continue. To face the challenges, we need to organize our ideas, and rethink the strategies.
In the market now, there are two new metal ingredients: Zinc Alloy and Silicon Alloy. The benefit of them is that they contain no Lead or cadmium, ideal to Europe and North American¡¯s idea of recycle. Moreover, there is a big supply of these metals. Products made from them will have an increase in durability, and hardness. Most of all, there is a great luster and high quality.
